Africa-Brazil Agricultural Innovation Marketplace (“Marketplace”)

1) What is the “Marketplace”?

A South-South partnership to foster agricultural research and innovation for development by supporting policy dialogue and collaborative projects.

Ultimately, the “Marketplace” will fund collaborative projects between Africa and Brazil in the field of agriculture.

2) What areas are contemplated for funding?

Proposals will be accepted within the 4 thematic areas below. Innovation should be a major component of the proposals. For details and examples of potential topics, please download the guidelines for proposals available on the website.

  1. Productivity Enhancing Technologies
  2. Natural Resource Management Improvement
  3. Policy, Institutional and Market Strengthening and Knowledge Management
  4. Smallholder and Poverty-Alleviation Targeted Technologies

3) Who can apply?

Individuals representing collaboration between African-based public or private, governmental or non-governmental research and development organizations, and one or more of Embrapa´s (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) centers. Projects with only African or Brazilian organizations are not eligible.

4) How do I find a Brazilian or African collaborator?

We encourage African and Brazilian individuals already working in collaboration to apply and certainly welcome new partnerships and innovative ideas that impact development.

5) How do I submit a proposal?

This is a 2-step process. The call for proposals IS OPEN.

6) How does the selection process work?

The “Marketplace” Steering Committee (SC) will be in charge of the selection process. The selection process will be as follows:

a) Selection of a subset of submitted pre-proposals based on the established eligibility and assessment criteria (see guidelines),
b) Authors of selected pre-proposals invited to present full proposals.
c) Selection of the best subset of submitted full proposals for project funding.

7) How much funding is available?

We expect to fund, initially, 5-7 projects. Funds for full proposal development might be available for selected pre-proposals.

8) What is the maximum duration of the projects?

Projects can have a maximum duration of 2 years.

9) What are the deadlines?

  • Dec 12th 2011 - Feb 29th 2012 - Call for pre-proposals
  • Mar 01st 2012 - Mar 12th 2012 - Pre-proposal evaluation and selection
  • Mar 12th 2012 - Mar 15th 2012 - Announcement and invitation of selected pre-proposals for submission of full proposals
  • Mar 15th 2012 - Apr 09th 2012 - Submission of full proposals
  • Apr 09th 2012 - Apr 16th 2012 - Full proposal evaluation and selection
